Click! Organising your holiday photos

Sammy Jane Ryan · Nov 4, 2019 ·

I remember how exciting it was to pick up that oblong envelope with your holiday snaps.  If you were organised, you even got them into a photo album!

These days we can share our photographic talents in so many ways – social media, photobooks, mugs, calendars – great fun and a great way to share and keep memories.

But often the photos remain on the phone not shared or enjoyed.  So many are then lost when the phone goes wrong or gets stolen.

It is no surprise that organising photos is one of our popular services.  Every picture tells a story, captures a moment in time to enjoy as part of family celebrations, remembrances and even as an aid for dementia sufferers.

So where do you start? Here are some of my favourite top tips:

Planning

Decide how you want to organise your photos – by year, by holiday, be event or something else?

Decide how you would like to be able to look at and enjoy your photos – traditional photo albums, photobooks, share them on social media, family archive online etc.

Back up

Not just once but twice!  First line of defence – make sure your phone is set to automatically back up your photos into the cloud.  And test it.  Then choose a second back up method.  It can be in another cloud-based option (I use a private album in Flickr, some people use Dropbox) or backed up onto a SD card or mini hard drive.

The final storage solution – Physical or digital?

You can then build on what you decided in the planning stage. Here are a few options to consider:

  • Local photo shops like Marlborough Photo Services can print it off any gadget
  • Alternatively, you can upload them onto a sites such as Photobox or Snapfish who will send you a set of photos
  • Uploading photos means you can then create photobooks, calendars, mugs and many other unique ways to feature your photographic talents.
  • If you are posting to social platforms check your privacy settings otherwise you could be sharing your holiday snaps 2.7 billion people!
  • If social media is not for you or you want to build a family archive take advantage of your cloud storage where your photos are backed up to create shared online albums.

Organising how you want to curate your photographic history can reap benefits – not just for now but in the future so make your summer project one for snapping, sharing and organising!
