Spring De-cluttering

Sammy Jane Ryan · Nov 4, 2019 ·

Longer days, warmer weather, daffodils appearing – Spring must be around the corner.

I love the word spring.  It conveys that feeling of a positive burst of energy – great words describing how the world wakes up from those sleepy winter months.  Therefore, it is not surprising that motivation i high to have a good  de-clutter to freshen things up.

It makes me laugh when a client says they imagine I live in a minimalist haven of nothingness – it just isn’t the case.  However, what I believe is the things you have in your home should help not hinder how you live.

The start of Spring is a good reminder for me to go through a declutter process.   Over the past few months I had the perfect opportunity  to clear some rooms as we carried out some building works.

Here are some things of my top spring de-clutter tips:

  • I put a recycle/donation box near the front door, and I added to it as I went along.
  • I recycled any clothes in my wardrobe that didn’t fit or I was no longer wearing.
  • I invested in some ‘thin’ hangers and created about a third more hanging space.
  • I thought I had a pretty organised kitchen but still found old saucepans and out of date jars and spices.
  • I cleared out cosmetics and creams I hadn’t used for a while – these can be the biggest germ carriers!
  • I took back old medications to the dispensary for proper disposal.
  • I thinned out the paperbacks and managed to create more hall space by getting rid of a fiddly bookcase.
  • I discovered the Tardis that was the garage! Boxes we had stored waiting to unpack once the work had been done were more than I remembered!  Having lived without the contents for over a year it was much easier to let go of things and not bring them into the newly decorated space

So how am I feeling now?  A lot calmer.  Everything has its place and managing the house has become much easier.  There were times when it was all a bit daunting, so I set up a simple routine where I did an hour of focused clearing each night and after a week it was done.

I now have a bit of a ‘spring’ in my step!
